RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku reportedly had a medical with Chelsea in a Frankfurt hospital in August according to German newspaper Bild.
The medical was in readiness for Chelsea bid in 2023 after Leipzig agreed a deal for Salzburg’s Benjamin Sesko who will join the club in summer of 2023 as a possible replacement for Nkunku.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is not yet done as Chelsea and RB Leipzig will speak about €60m release clause or a different deal structure.
Matt Law of Daily Telegraph confirmed the news as accurate and said it does not offer a guarantee that Chelsea will succeed in the signing but currently make them favourites for the transfer.
Nkunku joined Leipzig from PSG in 2019, helping the club to capture the DFB-Pokal against Freiburg last term.
He scored 35 goals in 52 matches last season and has already scored 6 times in 11 matches this term.
Nkunku won the 2021/22 Bundesliga player of the year award last season ahead of Robert Lewandowski, Patrik Schick and Erling Haaland.
The France international is keen to join the premier league club as discussions regarding salary and contract length are soon on the cards.
